Thibault Liger-Belair at The Corson Building

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Join Thibault Liger-Belair of Domaine Liger-Belair in Nuits-Saint-George for an intimate dinner at The Corson Building.  This is a rare opportunity to join one of the rising stars of Burgundy for a intimate dinner accompanied by a selection of ten of his stunningly elegant Burgundies.  The understated elegance of the space, the unapologetic seasonality of Chef/Owner Matt Dillon’s cuisine, and the unpretentious hospitality of Marc Papineau’s service team will provide the perfect complement to Thibault’s transparent, terroir-driven wines.

As you chat with Thibault, and enjoy a stunning dinner, you will be trying a selection  of Thibault’s very rare, and totally stunning old vine Burgundies including: 2006 Corton Les Renards Grand Cru (from vines planted in 1965), 2006 & 2002 Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas (from vines planted in 1956) and 2006 & 2004 Richebourg (from vines planted in 1936).

Due to the size of the space and the quantity of wines available, space is extremely limited.  Reservations are required.  Dinner with wines $225 per person.

Argentina: Big, Beautiful (Bargain) Wines

The story of Argentine wine is one of European immigration, high-altitude vineyards, breathtaking scenery and (recent) international investment. Though seeing quality Argentine wine on the market in the US is a relatively new thing, Argentina is full of old vines, and has a long, sometimes glorious history of producing outstanding wines. Malbec from Mendoza is certainly the star here, but we are just beginning to see the potential of Jujuy and Salta in the North, and Patagonia in the far south for white wines and Pinot Noir. On top of the old vines, incredible terrior and great winemaking, the American Dollar is strong in Argentina, and this makes the conditions perfect for the production of high value wines. We will talk about the history and the diverse regions while tasting stunning wines from up and down the wine regions of this country. If you’re looking for a way to drink well without spending a ton, Argentina is your country. We will taste wines from Vistalba, Familia Zuccardi, Susana Balbo and others: there will be a couple of whites, but this is really a class for people who love big, meaty reds.

$65/person | Space is limited, and reservations are required.  To make reservations, call Cellar46 at   206 407 3016.  Extraordinary Wine Club Members receive a 10% discount.

Making Sense of Burgundy

For Chardonnay and Pinot Noir lovers, Burgundy is hallowed ground.  At their best, wines from Burgundy are both hedonistic and thought-provoking, perfectly balancing deep flavors with minerality, acidity and oak. But Burgundy is also incredibly confusing, stretched over three political departments, with more than 100 separate AOC’s (appellations) and nearly as many styles of wine.  The wines range in quality from glorious to horrific, and the prices of the wines range from nearly reasonable to stunningly expensive.  To really enjoy these wines, one must first understand the region.  In this overview class, you will learn to navigate the labels and the region, while drinking some of the most delicious wines.  I will also make recommendations for finding some of the hidden bargains in Burgundy.    We will taste wines from Macon, Cote Chalonnaise, Chablis, Cote de Nuits, and Cote de Beaune, including at least two Grand Crus.

Introduction to Tasting Through the Great Wines of the World

Learn to taste wine like a pro with the 2006 “Best Young Sommelier in America” Jake Kosseff. The best way to learn how to taste is to taste the best wines: in this class Jake will guide you through tasting 8 delicious, classic wines while helping you to both understand what you’re tasting and develop a vocabulary to explain it. When you’re done, in addition to trying these great wines, you’ll be better able to describe what you do and don’t like, and be able to show off your new vocabulary to your friends. This is a slightly less serious version of the classes that Jake has used to train the staffs at notable Seattle restaurants such as Crush, Cascadia and Campagne. The Class includes hors d’oeuvres prepared by Cellar46 Chef Nalani Dias and generous tastes of eight wines. Wines tasted will include: 1995 Château Clerc Milon Pauillac Grand Cru Classé (WS 95), 2005 Francois Mikulski Meursault, 2005 Lagier-Meredith Syrah Mount Veeder (RP 95), and 2004 Tinto Pesquera Ribera de Duero Riserva (RP 94)
